“40 Below” From Mick Jenkins’ Wave[s]
On a tape characterized by Mick as “breaking from the familiar,” it’s not too surprising that one of the most slept on songs was a more conventional Mick joint. Like multiple songs on Wave[s], “40 Below” sees Mick thinking about love. However, along with playing with his voice in a relatively more subtle way, this one sees him attacking the subject with a gloomier tone, a stray away from the EP’s brighter, warmer aesthetic.
This makes it feel like the track wouldn’t be too out of place on The Water[s], if not for Mick’s dedication to creating a more diversely textured product coming into play here with THEMpeople’s dreamy production keeping the track in line with the rest of the tape.
