FSD Feature: Kanye West’s 25 Best Beats [1999-2005]

Posted on October 19, 2012 by FSD Staff

2. Kanye West “Jesus Walks” (2004)

Album: The College Dropout

07 Jesus Walks

Kanye has always been extra proud of this track. Hence “I made Jesus Walks, I’m never going to hell.” On “Last Call,” he disses sightless A&R’s that didn’t sign him even after having played “Jesus Walks” for them. On 60 Minutes, Kanye quickly puts together a beat for this old, white interviewer, who asks for clarification when Kanye starts talking about a “dope-ass beat.” He refers to the beat he had just made as “an alright beat,” but mentions “Jesus Walks” as the quintessential “dope-ass” beat. He uses a sample of the gospel song “Walk With Me,” performed by the Addicts Rehabilitation Center Choir. This was also one of his first collaborations with hip hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari. It ends up being quite the dope-ass beat, dope enough to maintain seriousness even while he makes a Happy Gilmore reference.

Too lazy to go through whole list, but Through The Wire should at least be in top 5

This track isn’t a Bette Midler sample, they had to recreate it in order to clear. 5iveit

Do Or Die – Higher was one of my favorites
An 88 Keys list would be awesome
