FSD Feature: 15 Essential Bop Songs

Posted on April 17, 2014 by FSD Staff

The Guys – Flee

Why The Guys didn’t at least append the title with “Pack On Me, Sack On Me,” I’ll never know, but it’s costing them business as that’s the part of the chorus that will be running sprints through your brain all day. The Guys’ “Flee” is a blast of six-cups-of-coffee-and-I-can-see-infinity jitteriness that forsakes a predictable 808 bass thud in favor of a footwork inflected 16th note rattle. Fya Man and the unfortunately named Smelly L lace the song’s vicious steel drum rattle with a few no nonsense verses and that instantly memorable chorus built around a bit of regional Chicago lingo. “Flee” is an incredibly efficient piece of machinery, stopping and starting on a dime with ease, and one of bop’s catchiest song’s yet.

Its a double negative with these songs. Kids wanna hear but they don’t seem to make radio versions (at least I haven’t seen many) and you can’t play them where kids go. (Prom, outdoor fest)
