FSD Feature: A Guide To Harold’s Chicken In Hip-Hop

Posted on June 9, 2014 by FSD Staff

Common – Can I Borrow A Dollar? (1992)

The beginning of this timeline begins when a rapper then-named Common Sense released his debut album, Can I Borrow A Dollar? The production was handled by Chicago legends No I.D. and The Twilite Tone. At the time, Tone and No ID were a production duo formally known as 2 pc. DRK, which is derived from yes, a Harold’s Chicken order. That’s right, the pillars of Chicago hip hop stand on top of sauce-soaked bread.

Check out Common on one of BET’s first shows, Video LP, back in 92 talking about Harold’s as well as explaining 2 pc. DRK. This is history right here.

“Half-dark special, hot sauce on it.” Trochaic but never prosaic.
