FSD Feature: 20 Dope Songs In Chicago-New York Collaboration History

Posted on August 27, 2014 by FSD Staff

KRS-One f/ Common “A Freestyle Song” (2003)

On “A Freestyle Song,” KRS-One demonstrates supreme microphone control over the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Who Shot Ya” instrumental. Listen between 0:50 – 1:33 to hear the Blastmasta imitate a human turntable. Common follows him with a magnificent spur-of-the-moment verse, during which, he likens himself to Latrell Sprewell and Rod Strickland. The track was recorded during the early 2000s on Funkmaster Flex’s radio show, and appears on KRS’s 2003 album, D.I.G.I.T.A.L. It may be one of the best songs in improvised hip hop history.
