FSD Feature: 20 Dope Songs In Chicago-New York Collaboration History

Posted on August 27, 2014 by FSD Staff

Cam’Ron f/ Kanye West & Syleena Johnson “Down & Out” (2004)

By this point in 2004, Cam no longer needed Kanye just for beats. Kanye was a certified star of his own, jumping all the way up to the second most successful artist on the Roc. So yeah, little brother was no longer just the little brother — Yeezy was now a force to be reckoned with. Cam needed that feature, even if it was just a hook.

For “Down and Out,” the production maestro sampled William Bell & Mavis Staple’s 1969 “Strung Out.” West delivers a triumphant chorus with the help of fellow Illinoisan Syleena Johnson, on this memorable cut off of Killa Cam’s undeniably dope 2004 album, Purple Haze.

*Also, we weren’t sure if Cam actually knew Kanye’s correct name, though. As he called him Kanyes West. :/
