16. Chance The Rapper f/ Vic Mensa & Sulaiman “Family” (2012)
If you only listen to a single track on this list it should actually be this one, becuase you can tell how close these kids are outside of the music itself. It’s full of familial nostalgia and it bursts with pride for the city, it’s like the audio equivalent of what we all want “summertime Chi” to be. It temporarily looks away from the “summertime Chi” that we know exists in Chance’s “Paranoia,” focusing in favor of grinding all day in the name of the fam.
What shouldn’t be ignored about Save Money is that they don’t push a specifically positive agenda, or a specifically ignorant agenda, or a specifically conscious agenda, but all of their diverse themes can be found in the catalog. Rather than pushing their ideals as the aesthetic itself, the ideals seem to emerge organically from the music.
Oh, plus it includes the best reference to FSD ever recorded in a song: “Sing all you want, just don’t Drake on they ass/Shore you got drive, don’t turn fake on they ass”
