14. Chance The Rapper “Chain Smoker” (2013)
Chance wanted to put all of himself into this song. If it was his “last shit,” it’d “have to be mad important.” If you had been listening to the tape from the beginning, this moment was as overwhelming as it was intended to be. It’s clear that Chance is already aware of the aesthetic that is and will be expected of him (“Last Chance joint, gotta be a dance joint from an introspective, drugged-out standpoint,” etc.), but really it just comes down to him wanting you to love all of his shit (He’s the kind of guy that will respond to irrational Esham stans with #alllove). This song reminds me a lot of when the lyric “I swear this right here, history in the making man” comes up on “Through The Wire.” Still so intimately connected to the roots, but everyone can tell things are about to be huge.
