5. Vic Mensa “Acid Trips To Vegas” (2012)

Though Vic Mensa a.k.a. “The Innanet” a.k.a. “Don Carlito” a.k.a. “Thurgood Rich Nigga” took until last month to officially become a solo artist, his potential to be one had been clear for years. Take this 2010 track (his first collaboration with Thelonious Martin), introduced by a clip from Black Moon’s “Who Got The Props,” that devolves into a dark, lyrical flex. At one point, the beat retreats into the quiet background as though exhausted from keeping up with Vic. The song ends unexpectedly, shortly after his still rapping voice begins to fade, having already proven that it was indeed he who “got the props.”
