13. Dally Auston – The Wood
SaveMoney’s lone wolf of the West Side quietly came through and dropped one of the years most cohesive projects. What’s interesting about the SaveMoney family, is that no two members sound alike. Their styles and subject matter vary and they appeal to a lot of different audiences, despite many tossing them in the “conscious” box. Dally’s SM counterparts (Mensa, Fresco, Purp, etc) show up to assist, but it’s Dally’s West Side comrades that really pull The Wood together. Beats from Hippie Dream , Smoko Ono and Saba provide Dally with luscious backdrops, while budding songstress Jean Deaux blesses the album with her heavenly hooks. There’s a new, alternative sound coming from out West right now. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Dally’s got bars and a great ear for beats (the stuff he picked from C-Sick is great), and if The Wood flew under your radar, you should familiarize yourself with it right now. Again, don’t say we didn’t warn you.
