2. Lucki Eck$ – Alternative Trap
The young phenom Lucki Eck$ seemingly came out of nowhere this year. He’s still very much under the radar, but those that know, know. His name was buzzing in industry circles before his first-ever mixtape dropped in July, and a handful of A&Rs and label execs flew to Chicago to catch his debut concert at Reggie’s. Pretty impressive considering his first blog post was in early-Spring.
The spacey and trance-inducing beats laced by the likes of Plu2o Nash and Hytman, were the perfect backdrops for Lucki’s wheezy, nasally voice and allowed him bob and weave throughout the project effortlessly. Lucki’s rhymes are far too advanced for a teenager, and his couplets, metaphors and obscure 90s wrestling references were enough to convert us to fans. While Alternative Trap might’ve gone unnoticed on some of the national lists, it’s truly one of 2013’s hidden gems.
