2. Tree – Sunday School
2012 has been a breakout year for Chicago rapper/producer, Tree. After slugging it out on the under-the-underground rap circuit for years, critics finally took notice to his unique sound that he’s christened Soul Trap. With the help of some influential music writers, Tree has seen his music spread to arms of the internet you’d never expect, and even earned a spot on MTV’s Top 5 Mixtapes of Year. Sunday School’s interesting sample choices, over 808 drums has caused quite a stir — enough to draw major label attention.
While we’ve known Tree has been a problem for a while, it’s nice to see the rest of the world paying attention. The attention is well deserved. Everything from the beats to the hooks to his wailing over the track works so well here. Sunday School is something you need to hear — and it stands as one of the best breakout projects of the year.
