11. Kids These Days – Traphouse Rock
A perfect conjunction of live music and rap, Kids These Days reached adulthood with Traphouse Rock. As soon as the music starts you are entrapped and entranced by every note. And just when you think rock music is all you’re getting, the hard flow kicks in that marrys the melody more perfectly than most band + rapper combos. There was a lot of hype surrounding the group and this album in particular, and they definitely delivered. With tracks like “Don’t Harsh My Mellow,” “L’Afrique” and “Bud Billiken” (which made our 100 Great Chicago Rap Songs), and with the clever sampling of classic songs we all love and remember, Kids These Days clearly deserve to hold down their spot on our list.
