FSD Feature: The 50 Greatest No ID Beats

Posted on November 19, 2013 by FSD Staff

33. Big Sean f/ Kendrick Lamar & Jay Electronica “Control” (2013)

Okay, okay. This song isn’t really remembered for the beat. It’s also not really remembered for being a Big Sean song, either. “Control” will, however, be remembered as the track that shook up the game and awoke many a sleeping rappers in 2013. It’s not a Kendrick Lamar song, but this was the verse heard round the world.

But while the beat wasn’t gushed over and discussed ad nauseum, it did play a critical role in the songs success. Seriously. In order for this track to have worked, it needed a dope yet understated instrumental — one for each of the superb lyricists to wax poetic over. Kendrick might’ve taken control of “Control,” but it was No ID who was working the control panel.

Crazy how No ID seemes to just stay so synonymous in his production with Hip-Hop regardless of the style and changes of mainstream music.
