FSD Feature: The 50 Greatest No ID Beats

Posted on November 19, 2013 by FSD Staff

28. Common “Stolen Moments (Pt. I, II & III)” (1997)

Yes, this song is actually three songs, but it makes more sense to include them as one. The trilogy was a classic whodunit from Com’s third album, One Day It’ll All Make Sense. In the tale, Com leaves town for a show only to return to find his residence ransacked and looted. But from the evidence, Com knew this was an inside job, and on “Stolen Moments,” Com cracks the case.

Com struggled to find out who’d stolen his new Iversons, cooked his chicken and jacked his Donny Hathaway tape; but the plot kept us on the edge of our seats for three records with entirely different beats. Black Thought showed up, so did Q-Tip. But while Com was the star of the show, No ID was able to seamlessly connect the tracks with three different sounds — which all remained beautifully soulful. The art of storytelling needs a canvas, and this production was it.

Crazy how No ID seemes to just stay so synonymous in his production with Hip-Hop regardless of the style and changes of mainstream music.
