FSD Feature: The 50 Greatest No ID Beats

Posted on November 19, 2013 by FSD Staff

13. Common “Invocation” / “Hungry” (1997)

Why did I put these two joints together? Well, because Common dropped a split video for them, so I figured I could do that here as well (if you didn’t watch Rap City, YO! or have the Box you probably didn’t know that). I mean, I was going to include both of them anyway. For many, “Invocation” was the pinnacle of One Day It’ll All Make Sense: an amazing jazzy beat and next level wordplay from Com. But in contrast, “Hungry” was a grimier record. Straight MCing — rough, rugged and raw. It just showed the duality of the project, and also the ability of No ID and Common to seamlessly play with sounds while keeping it cohesive.

Crazy how No ID seemes to just stay so synonymous in his production with Hip-Hop regardless of the style and changes of mainstream music.
